about

Based on Psalm 137 when the children of Israel were taken captive into Babylon. Their enemies wanted them to sing, but their harps were hanging on the willows (this is not a good thing) and no music was heard.

I met a lady at one of my concerts who was so encouraged by this song that she decided to resume praying for her daughter who had quit writing and singing music due to discouragement in her life. With gratitude for the encouragement received by the song, she named her pet bird "Willow" after the song.

Years later I returned to that same venue and she was happy to report that her daughter had since taken her 'harp' of the willow and was now making music. I love those moments!

lyrics

The Willow
By Frances Drost

I won't hang my harp upon the willow
I'll keep praising You as long as I have breath
Though the enemy will try to take the music
I won't hang my harp upon the willow

The harp is a symbol of music David used to praise His God
In times of battle it brought victory
In distress it brought song
So like David in the days of old
I will pick up my harp and sing
And I will praise You Lord
In spite of every troublesome thing

In the midst of trying times
When the load seems hard to bear
There's temptation to cease to praise Him
And hang my harp in despair
And the enemy comes to mock me
Saying "Play me another song"
And I pick up my harp and sing a song of victory

And I will cast my cares upon my Savior
For He cares for me like no one ever has
And I will sing a song of praise unto my Jesus
'Cause I won't hang my harp upon the willow
